# must not contain colour codes. Colored vHosts are given at operator discretion;
# must not be any instutional/co-operation lookalike (i.e, search.google.com or someguy.gov);
# must not contain the words 'ircop', 'admin', 'network', 'xertion', or any IRC Operator's nick;
# must not contain racist words (what is considered racist/derogatory by operator discretion);
# must not refer to other networks/spamming;
#* Invalid: <code>join.my.channel</code> or <code>come.to.irc.blahblahblah.net</code>
# must not refer to fraudulent activity. (DoSing, rooting, "carding," etc.)

Project Cloaks
Project cloaks are vHosts assigned to your group, such as <code>wikia/acwiki/username</code>. These types of vHosts cannot be requested using the HostServ system.

Project cloaks must be given by an IRC operator directly. Join #help to have these assigned to you.
Understanding vHosts
# vHosts are regulated by a bot, which validates the vHosts against the rules. If your vHost keeps getting rejected and you think it is a mistake, <code>/join #help</code> for further assistance.
# vHosts must then be manually approved.
# Ban evasion using vHosts will cause you to get: your vHost removed, network banned from Xertion for a set period of time, and vHost banned for an extended period.

Requesting a vHost
You must have a registered nickname in order to request a vHost. In order to register your nickname, please visit Registering your nickname

To request a vHost, use the command

<code>/msg HostServ REQUEST <em>vhost.goes.here</em></code>

Your vHost is activated automatically upon approval.

If it is not, you can turn it on using: <code>/msg HostServ ON</code>

Understanding of the vHost system
When you request a vHost, it is sent to the staff for activation.
*So if you keep on sending your request without correcting your error, we see it. Over and over.

*This can take anywhere from 6 seconds, and a few hours.
*Not everyone on the staff lives in your timezone.
*Sometimes a staff member may defer an answer pending consultation with other operators.
*Reminding staff to approve your vHost is nothing but frustrating. The staff saw your request in every condition where you got a valid response from the vHost request system. Please wait patiently.

Please do not experiment with different vHost requests, or put in a default example and expect to change it a few minutes later.

CuleX: Add simple example form.

This document shall clarify in what cases staff of the Xertion IRC network are allowed to handle bans of any sort. "You" shall refer to any client entity that was banned from the respective location (be it a channel or the network). "The channel" shall refer to a channel that you were banned from; likewise, "the network" shall refer to the Xertion IRC network and "the network staff" shall refer to any and all IRC Operators, regardless of rank, on the Xertion IRC network.

Claiming ignorance or inability to comprehend any of the text on this page does not protect you from any punishment as described in these policies in any way.

Channel Bans
As a rule of thumb, if you wind up banned from a channel, the network staff may not help you in any way.

This rule may be broken if and only if the member of the network staff who is helping you is also a member of the staff of the channel; in that case, the respective staff member may deal with your ban at their own discretion, which means that they cannot be held liable for their actions as part of the network. Their actions are to be seen as those of an individual, regular user of the network in that context.

In the process of a staff member of the network dealing with a channel ban, he or she must have legitimate access to any and all commands that are used. If this is not the case, the Network Owners of the network are permitted to revert any change to the ban list of the channel and to take disciplinary action on the offending operator at their own discretion.

Channel Ban Evasion
Please be aware that this section deals with channel operators evading bans on a channel. This is only a last resort; channel staff are expected to manage their channel to the best technical degree possible. Reporting channel ban evasion too early and/or too frequently may lead to punishment of the person who keeps sending reports and/or, at the discretion of the network staff, action against the channel in question. The definitions at the beginning of this document save "the network" are considered invalid in this section and have a different context.

Any op from a channel is permitted to report channel ban evasion to the #help channel on the network. Criteria for a channel ban evasion are:
* The last evasion must have happened in the last 24 hours.
* There must have been at least three evasions in total.
* The evading party must have been banned every time that he/she appeared in the channel.
* You must have set the smartest possible ban in order to keep the user out. Staff in #help will reject your claim if there is a simple ban that keeps the user out.

You are expected to collect logs of the individual bans with sufficient context that makes their time and date clear before you report it. The network staff reserves the right to reject taking action for any reason whatsoever, including none. The type and duration of punishment (if any) shall not be revealed to the channel staff. Once a ban evasion is escalated to the network layer, the channel staff are no longer able to influence disciplinary action and any decision made by the network staff is to stay between the staff and the evading party.

Network Bans
Any full Global Operator or higher on the network is permitted to add and remove bans as they see fit. If you find yourself in the situation that you are banned from the network, you are not to connect to the network in order to appeal your ban, as that would constitute a ban evasion, for which you may or may not receive an increased time of ban.

It is, however, possible to defend yourself against a ban that you find is not legitimate. The first possibility consists of e-mailing [mailto:admin@xertion.org admin@xertion.org] with your ban message and why you believe that you should be unbanned. Alternatively, it is an option to submit a ticket on http://support.xertion.org/ in the category "Ban appeals". The staff will review your appeal and deliberate upon your case. In the event that your ban was removed, you will be able to connect to the network. Should your appeal be rejected, you are not to connect to the network until your ban times out. As mentioned previously, ban evasion may increase your sentence. Repeatedly appealing a ban results in an extension of your ban length; "no" means "no".

During the time that you are banned, you are not entitled to any of your entities you own on the network; this includes, but is not limited to channels and nicks. If you are banned for longer than their respective expiry time is, you automatically forfeit your ownership on them. They shall expire naturally and are not to be given out, even if your ban time is clearly longer than the expiry time of an entity in your possession.

The exception to the previous paragraph consists of services abuse -- if you used services for malicious purposes and obtained any kind of entity in order to do so, your entities are to be removed along with adding a network-wide ban by the network staff.

Disclaimer
The network is able to change these policies at any time for any reason whatsoever, including none, at any given point of time, the users must be notified when any change took place using a /WALLOPS message. Should a situation occur that has not been considered in these policies, the network staff are allowed to come up with decisions as necessary and update this document afterwards. The section called "Too Long; Didn't Read" at the very end of this document only serves as a summary of these policies; its content does not have the same binding affect as all other sections.

Too Long; Didn't Read
IRC operators on Xertion won't unban you from channels unless they're ops themselves there; you may ask about network bans at [mailto:admin.xertion.org admin@xertion.org] or http://support.xertion.org and if your appeal is rejected, don't ask again or you'll get a longer ban. In addition, don't ever ban evade.

Form
In case you wish to e-mail us, here is a template form to fill in with the information we need:

NickServ

Registering your nickname
Type the following commands to register your nickname:

# <code>/msg NickServ REGISTER <em>password</em> <em>valid@email.address</em></code> <br> The email address must be a valid email address you can use, and password must be a valid password (i.e., it cannot be your nickname or less than 5 characters long). <br> Mibbit Users: Creating an account at Mibbit does not mean that you have registered on Xertion. Nick registration on Xertion is completely different and not affiliated with Mibbit in any way.
# After issuing that command, an email will be sent with a confirmation code to your email address. Copy and paste the codes within 24 hours from your email address you just registered to complete the registration process; otherwise the nick will be available for others to register: <br> <code>/msg NickServ CONFIRM <em>ConfirmationCodeFromEmail</em></code>

Now that you have registered your nickname, you can request a vHost or register a channel.

Identifying your nickname
Now that you have registered your nickname, it is very important to remember to identify EVERY TIME you access Xertion. The password in this case is the password you supplied during nick registration.
* Usage: /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password
** Example: /msg NickServ IDENTIFY mypass

Troubleshooting
Wrong Email
If you entered a wrong email address in your nick registration, you can issue the following command and then re-register your nickname:

<code>/msg NickServ CANCEL <em>password</em></code>

(Where <code><em>password</em></code> is the password you used to register your nick before.)

Lost Password
See Forgot your password?.

Expired Nick
Registered nicks will expire after 60 days of inactivity; i.e., you must <code>IDENTIFY</code> the nickname before the expiration date:

<code>/msg NickServ IDENTIFY <em>password</em></code>

(Where <code><em>password</em></code> is the password you used to register your nick before.)

The Xertion IRC network shall henceforth be called simply "Xertion" or "the network".

Definition of a Testlink
A testlink is a temporary status for new servers on the network. A new server will be linked to a regular hub like all other servers matching its region. The duration of a testlink is at least three weeks (21 days).

During testlink, the following restrictions apply: No IRC Operator that was introduced by linking said server shall receive any permissions with services unless all Network Owners unanimously agree.

After these first three weeks, the initial testlink time, the Network Owners will make a decision on whether or not to keep the server around; one of three results is possible:
* The server is rejected. Staff introduced by the link may be kept or not, depending on whether they are a valuable asset to the network.
* The server is kept in testlink for another while; the added duration must be fixed and not exceed 42 days.
* The server is promoted to full link. All restrictions will be removed promptly.

Application for Linking a Server
Anyone may request to link to Xertion. Links from existing opers will be preferred but may not introduce new staff unless agreed otherwise with Kaishiro.

After submitting your application, you will get a response on IRC in a private message by Kaishiro. He will inform you whether or not your application was accepted or not; all decisions are final.

All following requirements and recommendations are subject to change at a moment's notice.
Requirements to Link
* Home servers need not apply, no matter how great you think your hardware/connectivity may be.
* Your server must either be a VPS, a dedicated server or colocated.
* You must have root access on the server and follow requests to install software during the initial setup of the link.
* You should be able to provide at least 2Mbps down and up and provide a monthly traffic of about a gigabyte.
* Your server must be running Linux, OpenBSD or FreeBSD. No Windows or OS X servers whatsoever and you must be capable of doing basic administration tasks on your own (roughly to the point of LPIC-1).
* Your server may not link to another network at the same time.
* Your server must have an i686 or x86_64 architecture CPU with at least 1GHz. Your server must have at least 256MB of RAM.
* You must have an IPv4 IP address that you can dedicate to the network; ports should be possible to open as necessary for client and server connections.
* Your server must use ntp to synchronize its time accurately. Failure to do so will be a reason to reject your application or delink your server prematurely. If you are linking a VPS and ntp is not an option, make sure you can prove that your time is reliable.
* You, the server administrator, must speak English relatively fluently. This applies to any IRC Operators you may wish to bring as well.

Recommendations
* Your server should not be hosted by OVH or FDC.
* Your server should have native IPv6, at least one IP.
* Your server should have a secondary IPv4 address; it might be used for setting up a webchat instance. If you are alright with that, please specify so.
* Your server should not run any software for personal use (this includes, but is not limited to, GUIs/X11 and torrenting programs).
* You should be able to provide the account for the IRCd linked to the network with sudo access temporarily for the initial setup to make it easier on us.
* You should add no operators if possible; it increases the likelihood of a link.
* Bonus points for being part of the datacenter.
* To make our life easier, please install: gnutls and gnutls-dev, g++ (On FreeBSD: clang is also alright), make and all other essential compilation tools, Perl (5.8.0+), vi.

During testlink, the following restrictions apply: No IRC Operator that was introduced by linking said server shall receive any permissions with services unless agreed otherwise with Kaishiro.

* Your server must have an x86_64 architecture CPU with at least 1GHz.

Form
07:12 <@culex> - ns_certfp writes its db... but without line breaks which are vital in PARSING IT AGAIN
07:12 <@culex> - ns_certfp loaded, goes "gotta load my db or I'm trash"

Download: here
<Tabber>
Step 1=
* Install HexChat with a Normal Installation. Choosing anything but normal installation will cause you to also install perl, python, and other languages. Normal is fine for the IRC beginner, and do not make it portable unless you are going to use it only on a flash drive.

<br/>
-
Step 2=
* After installing HexChat you will be prompted a screen that will require you to enter your desired nick name, remember to only use normal ASCII characters and don't use any spaces. Next click on "Add" and replace "New Network" with Xertion then hit the "Favor" button. After you completed all of that then hit "Edit".

<br/>

-
Step 3=* Click on "newserver/6667" and hit "Edit". Here we need to connect to a Xertion server, so put irc.xertion.org/6667 in "newserver/6667"'s place. Make sure to press ENTER after changing "newserver/6667" to irc.xertion.org/6667 or it won't save and you won't be able to connect. Don't forget to checkmark "Auto connect to this network at startup" to make life easier. Lastly you should enter a "Favorite channel" as this will let you auto connect to #lobby everytime you connect to the Xertion network. So hit the "...".

We do recommend that you use SSL, which means using 6697 as the port and checking the two SSL option boxes here.

<br/>

-
Step 4=* Click on "Add", and it'll ask you to type in a channel you need to type #lobby (remember to do the #). At this time if you wish to enter any other channel you may enter it now. When you are done hit "OK".

<br/>
-
Step 5=* Now you are brought back to the previous window (the one that edits the Xertion network). So all you need to do now is type the Nickserv password if you have registered your nick with Xertion. If you haven't registered yet then you may put down the password you will register with (this will save you from having to go back and adding the password later), and yes everyone SHOULD register their nicks. Now hit "Close".

<br/>

-
Step 6=* After you complete steps 2-5 you will be brought back to the "Network List" that you initially saw after you installed XChat-WDK. You should checkmark "Skip network list on startup" as you have pretty much finished editing the Xertion network and automated commands. After you do the checkmark hit "Connect" and you will be connect to #lobby on Xertion.

<br/>
-
Step 7=* Congratulations you now can connect and chat on Xertion's network!

<br/>

</Tabber>

mIRC
Download: here
<Tabber>
Step 1=* Download the installer for mIRC from their website. It’s free for 30 days, after that it will let you continue to use it, however the main page will stay on longer before the “Continue” button appears.
Install mIRC by doing a full installation, enabling checking for updates is recommended.

<br/>
-
Step 2=* Open mIRC, it will prompt you to register the software, please take the time to do so. If you are going to use the trial please hit "Continue" and proceed to step 3.

<br/>

-
Step 3=* At this point mIRC will ask you to pick a nickname, it is not permanent even after you register the nickname (registering is covered in a different tutorial). I'd recommend using your forum username as to avoid confusion to who is who. The only limitations to a nickname is you can't use spaces and can't use unusual ASCII characters. Chances are if you don't know what ASCII is then you should be fine with what you choose.

<br/>
-
Step 4=* By default mIRC will pick a random network to connect to, however you want to be on the Xertion network, thus we must change our default server to a Xertion server. Select "Servers" under "Connect" on the left, and click on "Add".

<br/>

-
Step 5=* Another window will pop up, this needs to be filled out since Xertion is a relatively small network and is not recognized by mIRC by default. The first thing you want to do is put "Random Server" under the Description, as this will help you keep your list of servers organized. Next under IRC Server: you need to put: "irc.xertion.org". You should use the default port, so under ports put: "6667". Lastly type in "Xertion" under Group as this will again keep this all organized. When you are done click on "Add".

<br/>
-
Step 6=* An automatic feature of mIRC that is enabled by default (for your protection) is to only allow the download of a certain file types. For downloading purposes we need to change these options (don't worry we'll keep you protected still )
*So on the left hand corner expand "DCC" and select "Ignore". You wanna change it from "Accept only" to "Ignore only". And that is it, this will still offer some protection and can download a large range of different material.

<br/>

-
Step 7=* Now you'll need to make sure you will connect to a Xertion server so click on "Servers" under "Connect" and expand the Xertion group (signified as a folder), and click on "Random Server" as shown in the picture below. Then click on "Select".

<br/>
-
Step 8=* Next you want to connect to the server. So on the left hit "Connect" option and hit the "Connect" button. You will then be connected to a Xertion server.

<br/>

-
Step 9=* After mIRC has connected you to the server you will be asked to join a channel. First thing you will need to do is click on "Add" on the right.

<br/>
-
Step 10=* One thing you need to know about channels is that you need to have a # in front of it no matter the name or how you are tying to join it. So to join the main lobby channel you will always need to type: #lobby. So under Channel you will need to type "#lobby". Next click on "Join on connect". This will allow you to connect to #lobby automatically without having to type #lobby in mIRC favorites every time you connect to a Xertion server. Next click on "Add".

<br/>

-
Step 11=* Since we added Xertion as a known network in step 5 we have the ability to allow channels to be automatically connected. So you will have to scroll down close to the bottom and find "Xertion" and click on it. Once you clicked on "Xertion" hit "OK".

<br/>

-
Step 12=* Verify that what you just did in step 11 and 12 were done correctly and make sure the add channel window looks just like what is displayed below. Once you verify that it looks correct you will need to hit "OK".

<br/>

-
Step 13=* Make sure #lobby is selected and uncheck "Pop up favorites on connect", this will make it so every time you connect to a network it will not pop open the list of favorite channels (personally I hate that window, and would rather use the /join #nameofchannel command while connected to a server). Next hit "Join" and you will then be connected to Xertion's lobby.

<br/>

-
Step 14=* Congratulations you now can connect and chat on Xertion's network!

<br/>
Download: Using whatever package manager your Linux/UNIX version uses. If no package is provided, see http://www.irssi.org/.

* Using Ubuntu as an example, the installation procedure goes: <code>$ sudo apt-get install irssi</code>

* irssi is a command-line client; you must run it from a terminal: <code>$ irssi</code>

* You will now want to set some settings first of all: nick, ident and ircname. Type: <code>/set nick yournick

/set user_name yourident

/set real_name some witty comment or your real name</code>

* After this, you must add the Xertion network and a server to use for it (Note: Since most Linux distribution ship irssi with SSL enabled, the /server command will also enable an encrypted connection to your server for more privacy and safety). Type: <code>/network add Xertion

/server add -ssl -network Xertion irc.xertion.org 6697</code>

* Now you can add some channels to join; in this example, you will be joining the channel #lobby (Just repeat the command with a different channel name to join more than one channel on connecting). Type: <code>/channel add -auto #lobby Xertion</code>

* Make sure that irssi saves your settings. Type: <code>/save</code>

* Connect to the network now. Type: <code>/connect Xertion</code>

* To change the window to the newly-opened channel window, type Alt-2. You're talking in #lobby now!

Download: here

* Install HexChat with a Normal Installation. Choosing anything but normal installation will cause you to also install perl, python, and other languages. Normal is fine for the IRC beginner, and do not make it portable unless you are going to use it only on a flash drive.

* Click on "newserver/6667" and hit "Edit".

* Click on "Add", and it'll ask you to type in a channel you need to type #lobby (remember to do the #). At this time if you wish to enter any other channel you may enter it now. When you are done hit "OK".

* Now you are brought back to the previous window (the one that edits the Xertion network). So all you need to do now is type the Nickserv password if you have registered your nick with Xertion. If you haven't registered yet then you may put down the password you will register with (this will save you from having to go back and adding the password later), and yes everyone SHOULD register their nicks. Now hit "Close".

* After you complete steps 2-5 you will be brought back to the "Network List" that you initially saw after you installed XChat-WDK. You should checkmark "Skip network list on startup" as you have pretty much finished editing the Xertion network and automated commands. After you do the checkmark hit "Connect" and you will be connect to #lobby on Xertion.

* Congratulations you now can connect and chat on Xertion's network!

mIRC
Download: here

* Download the installer for mIRC from their website. It’s free for 30 days, after that it will let you continue to use it, however the main page will stay on longer before the “Continue” button appears.
Install mIRC by doing a full installation, enabling checking for updates is recommended.

* Open mIRC, it will prompt you to register the software, please take the time to do so. If you are going to use the trial please hit "Continue" and proceed to step 3.

* At this point mIRC will ask you to pick a nickname, it is not permanent even after you register the nickname (registering is covered in a different tutorial). I'd recommend using your forum username as to avoid confusion to who is who. The only limitations to a nickname is you can't use spaces and can't use unusual ASCII characters. Chances are if you don't know what ASCII is then you should be fine with what you choose.

* By default mIRC will pick a random network to connect to, however you want to be on the Xertion network, thus we must change our default server to a Xertion server. Select "Servers" under "Connect" on the left, and click on "Add".

* Another window will pop up, this needs to be filled out since Xertion is a relatively small network and is not recognized by mIRC by default.

* An automatic feature of mIRC that is enabled by default (for your protection) is to only allow the download of a certain file types. For downloading purposes we need to change these options (don't worry we'll keep you protected still )
*So on the left hand corner expand "DCC" and select "Ignore". You wanna change it from "Accept only" to "Ignore only". And that is it, this will still offer some protection and can download a large range of different material.

* Now you'll need to make sure you will connect to a Xertion server so click on "Servers" under "Connect" and expand the Xertion group (signified as a folder), and click on "Random Server" as shown in the picture below. Then click on "Select".

* Next you want to connect to the server. So on the left hit "Connect" option and hit the "Connect" button. You will then be connected to a Xertion server.

* After mIRC has connected you to the server you will be asked to join a channel. First thing you will need to do is click on "Add" on the right.

* One thing you need to know about channels is that you need to have a # in front of it no matter the name or how you are tying to join it.

* Since we added Xertion as a known network in step 5 we have the ability to allow channels to be automatically connected. So you will have to scroll down close to the bottom and find "Xertion" and click on it. Once you clicked on "Xertion" hit "OK".

* Verify that what you just did in step 11 and 12 were done correctly and make sure the add channel window looks just like what is displayed below. Once you verify that it looks correct you will need to hit "OK".

* Make sure #lobby is selected and uncheck "Pop up favorites on connect", this will make it so every time you connect to a network it will not pop open the list of favorite channels (personally I hate that window, and would rather use the /join #nameofchannel command while connected to a server). Next hit "Join" and you will then be connected to Xertion's lobby.

* Congratulations you now can connect and chat on Xertion's network!

* Congratulations you now can connect and chat on Xertion's network!

irssi
Download: Using whatever package manager your Linux/UNIX version uses. If no package is provided, see http://www.irssi.org/.

* Using Ubuntu as an example, the installation procedure goes: <code>$ sudo apt-get install irssi</code>

* irssi is a command-line client; you must run it from a terminal: <code>$ irssi</code>

* You will now want to set some settings first of all: nick, ident and ircname. Type: <code>/set nick yournick

/set user_name yourident

/set realname some witty comment or your real name</code>

* Click on "newserver/6667" and hit "Edit".

* Click on "newserver/6667" and hit "Edit".

* Congratulations you now can connect and chat on Xertion's network!

irssi
Download: Using whatever package manager your Linux/UNIX version uses. If no package is provided, see .

* After this, you must add the Xertion network and a server to use for it (Note: Since most Linux distribution ship irssi with SSL enabled, the /server command will also enable an encrypted connection to your server for more privacy and safety). Type: <code>/network add Xertion

/server add -ssl -network Xertion irc.xertion.org 6697</code>

* Now you can add some channels to join; in this example, you will be joining the channel #lobby (Just repeat the command with a different channel name to join more than one channel on connecting). Type: <code>/channel add -auto #lobby Xertion</code>

* Connect to the network now. Type: <code>/connect Xertion</code>

* To change the window to the newly-opened channel window, type Alt-2. You're talking in #lobby now!
