Updated registration bit to indicate there may be times where Xertion staff manually validates new registrations instead of by email. Also updated the Nickname Expiration section to be 90 days as this was a recent configuration change as well.

WARNING - READ THIS BEFORE REGISTERING!

Please note, that per Xertion network policy, use of so-called "Disposable Email Address" services with NickServ are STRICTLY PROHIBITED. PLEASE do not use these with our network services! This is for your own safety and security. Such addresses are typically very lightly secured or not secured at all, and many allow public access without authentication. Therefore, we will block these from sending through our mail server. Please take note of the following consequences if you choose to ignore this warning and use a disposable email address anyway:

  1. Your nickname WILL be force-dropped with no notice or warning...
  2. We will NOT help you restore your account...
  3. We will NOT help you if your account is taken over, no matter how much you beg and plead...

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. If you need a good email service to use, we suggest using ProtonMail.

If you understand this, then proceed on...

Registering your nickname

Registering your nickname on Xertion is a simple process. Just follow these instructions:

  1. First, switch to the nickname you wish to register, and type this command: /msg NickServ REGISTER password email address - please make sure to specify a VALID email address, as you will be required to check it to complete your registration! In addition, your password cannot be the nickname and it cannot be less than 5 characters long.
    1. NOTE: There may be instances where Xertion staff will manually review new registrations themselves rather than through email. This is usually done only when necessary. If you get told that an admin needs to review your account when registering, please don't message any oper directly; hopefully we'll catch it and be able to review and activate your account before that 24 hour validation period expires, that means either we missed it or determined it violated some policy and thus it was rejected.
  2. After you issue the REGISTER command, NickServ will send an email to the email address you supplied with the command, containing a confirmation code. You will need to copy that code and use it with the CONFIRM command: /msg NickServ CONFIRM confirmation code. NOTE: This will NOT apply if Xertion staff are currently manually verifying new registrations.
  3. Once you have entered the confirmation code with the NickServ CONFIRM command, your registration is now complete. You can now do things like request a vHost or register a channel. You may also wish to set various options for your nickname - type /msg NickServ help set to see the various options you can change.
  • Mibbit Users: Mibbit registration is a separate registration that has nothing to do with our NickServ registration process, it is a completely separate thing. Please remember that we are not affiliated with Mibbit in any way.

Identifying

Once you have registered your nickname, you must identify to it each time you connect to Xertion, using NickServ's IDENTIFY command: /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password - replace password with the password you used when you registered the nickname.

As an alternative, you may also set up a SSL client certificate to use to automatically identify to your nickname on connect - instructions on how to do that can be found by clicking here.

Nickname issues
